Why Analog Activities Feel Better for Your Brain Than Screens
We don’t always feel bad after using screens. We just feel… slightly more scattered, and sometimes that doesn’t even register because screens are so ubiquitous in our lives. But research in cognitive science and psychology suggests something interesting: The format of an activity changes how your brain processes it.

Psychologists often refer to this as deep attention, a state where cognitive resources are focused on one input for a sustained period of time. That matters because attention isn’t just about focus. It directly affects memory encoding, emotional processing, and problem-solving depth.

Writing by hand activates different learning systems.
One of the most studied analog activities is handwriting. Research using neuroimaging has shown that writing by hand engages more widespread brain networks compared to typing, including brain areas linked to motor control, visual processing, and memory formation. This doesn’t mean typing is “bad.” It just means your brain is doing something different when you type than when you write by hand. More deliberate movement tends to create more durable memory traces.

Most digital platforms are designed around speed, interaction, and continuous input.
